چکیده

We present 4-meter Kitt Peak telescope and 6.5-meter MMT spectrophotometry of the extremely low-metallicity galaxy SBS 0335–052W, the western companion of the blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335–052E. These observations have been combined with published 10-meter Keck data to derive for the brightest region of SBS 0335– 052W an oxygen abundance 12 + log O/H = 7.12 ± 0.03. This makes SBS 0335–052W the lowest metallicity star-forming galaxy known in the local universe. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we fit the spectral energy distribution of SBS 0335–052W to derive the age of the oldest stars contributing to its optical light. We find that star formation in SBS 0335–052W began less than 500 Myr ago, making it a likely nearby young dwarf galaxy. The Extraordinary Mid-infrared Spectrum of the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy Sbs 0335 052

SBS0335-052 is a blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) with one of the lowest known metallicities, Z∼Z⊙/41, making it a local example of how primordial starburst galaxies and their precursors might appear. A spectrum obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope clearly shows silicate absorption features, emission lines of [SIV] and [NeIII], and puts strong upper limits...

Probing Star Formation at Low Metallicity: the Radio Emission of Super Star Clusters in Sbs0335−052

We present high-resolution radio continuum observations of the nascent starburst in the metalpoor galaxy SBS 0335−052. These radio data were taken with the Very Large Array and include observations at 0.7 cm, 1.3 cm, 2 cm, 3.6 cm, and 6 cm. These observations enable us to probe the thermal radio nebulae associated with the extremely young star-forming regions in this galaxy. Two discrete and lu...

Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies with Spitzer: the Infrared/radio Properties

We study the correlation between the radio, mid-infrared, and far-infrared properties for a sample of 28 blue compact dwarf (BCD) and low-metallicity star-forming galaxies observed by Spitzer. We find that these sources extend the same far-infraredYtoYradio correlation typical of star-forming late-type galaxies to lower luminosities. In BCDs, the 24 m (or 22 m) mid-infraredYtoYradio correlation...
